Although the loss of Soviet support has created grave problems for India’s military, shifts in strategic tectonic plates are offering India an opportunity to reassess its international orientation and to maneuver itself into a dominant regional position, To take advantage of these opportunities, India has committed itself to a search for new allies – beyond the narrow geopolitical confines of the old East-West division – so as to realize fully its economic and military potential.
