Amy E. Gadsden

Amy Gadsden, formerly a Senior Fellow with FPRI, is Associate Dean and Executive Director of International Programs at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. From 2006-08, she served as Resident Country Director for China at the International Republican Institute (IRI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing democracy worldwide. She managed multiple development programs on the Chinese mainland from IRI’s regional office in Hong Kong, including a comprehensive civil society building program working with HIV/AIDS NGOs, migrant worker associations, and women’s rights groups.

From 2001-03, Dr. Gadsden was Special Advisor for China in the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. While at State, she helped to establish a multimillion-dollar grant program to support democracy, human rights and the rule of law in China and was responsible for reporting on multinational firms’ corporate social responsibility efforts in the PRC.

She has worked extensively on joint cooperation projects with Chinese governmental and nongovernmental agencies and has done consulting work for the UN Development Programme, the UN High Commissioner’s Office for Human Rights, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the National Committee on US-China Relations. She is an Advisory Council member of the Women’s Democracy Network (WDN).
