The Alvin Z. Rubinstein Memorial Lectures were established in honor of FPRI Senior Fellow Alvin Z. Rubinstein (1927–Dec. 18, 2001) with a gift from Susan and Sherwood Goldberg, along with friends and colleagues of Dr. Rubinstein, to explore aspects of international relations and national securitiy which were of special interest to him.
Dr. Rubinstein joined the University of Pennsylvania as a lecturer in 1957 and became a professor in 1966. His research and teaching focused on Russian foreign policy, conflict in the developing world, and national security. He authored or edited 22 books and contributed to many others. In addition to his bachelor’s degree from CUNY and master’s and Ph.D. from Penn, he was a graduate of the U.S. Maritime Academy who served in the Merchant Marines and was a member of the Board of Advisors of the Naval War College.
As Mr. Goldberg observed of Dr. Rubinstein in his introduction to the 2006 Rubinstein lecture, “Al was a brilliant scholar, a superb teacher whose classes were always oversubscribed, a very special friend, and a supporter of colleagues and countless students around the world.”
