The late Robert Strausz-Hupé, born in Vienna under the rule of the Hapsburg Empire, witnessed the rise and fall of Nazism and global communism and world events as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, as an author, and as U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Belgium, Sweden, NATO, and Turkey. He founded the Foreign Policy Research Institute in 1955 and two years later published the first issue of Orbis, the quarterly journal that remains to this day the Institute’s flagship publication.
Harvey Sicherman, president of the Foreign Policy Institute, offers a detailed view of the Ambassador’s contributions in “Robert Strausz-Hupé: His Life and Times” in the Spring 2003 issue of Orbis.
In 1998, on the occasion of Ambassador Strausz-Hupé’s 95th birthday (see remarks), the Trustees of FPRI announced the establishment of the Robert Strausz-Hupé Annual Lecture Fund. This special fund enables FPRI to invite a distinguished scholar or statesman to address a significant international issue each year. Charles B. Grace, Treasurer of FPRI, chairs the lecture series.
On November 15th at the FPRI annual dinner Fouad Ajami was presented with the Seventh Annual Benjamin Franklin Public Service Award. The event was attended by over 360 people.
Dr. John M. Templeton, Jr. was dinner chairman.
