Eliot A. Cohen is the Robert E. Osgood Professor of Strategic Studies, Director of the Strategic Studies Program, and Director of the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of numerous publications, including Conquered Into Liberty: Two Centuries of Battles Along the Great Warpath that made the American Way of War (2011) and Supreme Command: Soldiers, Statesmen and Wartime Leadership (2002), which won the first Huntington Prize, administered by the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University. He served as counselor of the U.S. Department of State, and is a former professor at Harvard University and the U.S. Naval War College. He has also served on the Policy Planning Staff of the secretary of Defense and directed the U.S. Air Force’s Gulf War Air Power Survey. Dr. Cohen is a member of the Defense Policy Board and other governmental and private advisory committees. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard.
