Message from the President

Spend April With FPRI

Alan Luxenberg

Friends of FPRI,

In April, the Foreign Policy Research Institute is offering programs in Philadelphia, Princeton, NYC, Washington, DC, and on the Web.  We briefly describe each program below, with a hyperlink for more details.

Hal BrandsTuesday, April 1 at FPRI and on the Web: Geopolitics with Granieiri – Exclusively for FPRI Members.  Join FPRI’s Ron Granieri, as he “interrogates” Hal Brands of Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy and author of the new book What Good is Grand Strategy? In this session, we will explore why grand strategy is a concept that is so alluring—and so elusive—to those who make American statecraft amid the turbulence of global affairs and the chaos of domestic politics.  This event will also be webcast live, so be sure to register online if you cannot make it to Philadelphia.  For more information on how to become an FPRI Member, please click here.

Robert KaplanSunday, April 6 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia: FPRI’s Annual Champagne Brunch Sponsored by Beneficial Bank – Exclusively for FPRI Partners.  Join the renowned world traveler and author, Robert Kaplan, as he discusses his new book, Asia’s Cauldron: The South China Sea and the End of a Stable Pacific.  In his book, Kaplan, the Chief Geopolitical Strategist for Stratfor, offers up a vivid snapshot of the nations surrounding the South China Sea, the conflicts brewing in the region at the dawn of the twenty-first century, and their implications for global peace and stability.  For more information on how to become a partner of FPRI, please click here.

Michael HorowitzTuesday, April 8 at the National Liberty Museum: Robots and the Future of War – Part of the Stanley and Arlene Ginsburg Lecture Series.  Join Michael Horowitz, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, as he discusses why the United States’ technological lead may not be assured forever. Just back from spending a year as a Council on Foreign Relations Fellow at the Pentagon, Horowitz will assess the “game-changing technologies” that we need to maintain that military advantage.

David DaneloSaturday, April 12 at FPRI: Transforming Study Abroad – Do you know a student planning to study abroad this year, or travelling for an extended period of time? If so, you will definitely want to alert them to this one-day course specially designed to prepare students to learn, research, and study abroad confidently amid uncertainty. Learn to make the most of your travel abroad from professional researchers who have worked in unstable environments worldwide.  The course is $90 per student, but space is limited to 50 seats, so make sure to reserve as quickly as possible.

Jacqueline DealWednesday, April 16 at the BNY Mellon Building: The Eagle and the Dragon: China’s Place in U.S. Defense Strategy  – The inaugural Foreign Policy Round Table for Rising Philadelphians Sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management.  Join Jacqueline Deal, President and CEO of the Long Term Strategy Group, as we kick off this new initiative to provide a venue for rising Philadelphians to engage with leaders, policy experts, and – most importantly – each other about the most pressing foreign policy issues of the day.  In this talk, Deal will address the validity of the President’s “Pivot to Asia”, China’s continuing aggression in the East and South China seas, and the implications for US Defense Policy.

Jacob ShapiroThursday, April 17 in Princeton, NJ: The Terrorists’ Dilemma: Managing Violent Covert Organizations – Exclusively for FPRI Members at the $250 Level (and above). Join Princeton University’s Jacob Shapiro, as he constructs an unusual picture of terrorist organizations – and the weaknesses they share with other bureaucratic institutions as well as the dilemmas they face in maintaining control and secrecy simultaneously. Using captured al Qaeda documents and the techniques of organizational studies, Shapiro will explore how terrorist groups operate and how their weaknesses may be exploited.
