Questions like these were examined on January 25, 2010 at Power in East Asia: What Is It and Who Has It?, a conference co-sponsored with and hosted by the Reserve Officers Association in Washington, D.C. and webcast online.

In the second panel, Michael Auslin, Director of Japan Studies at the American Enterprise Institute and Paul S. Giarra, President of Global Strategies and Transformation, commented on “Japan in Asia: A Hard Case for Soft Power,” a paper by Thomas Berge of Boston University.
