“The latest casualty of the Ukraine crisis was formally announced earlier this week: the South Stream pipeline. Though the Russian government had been pushing the pipeline for years, the European Union had blocked the project, ostensibly over worries about its effect on Europe’s gas market, but in large part due to concerns that it weakened Ukraine’s position vis-à-vis Russia. The formal cancellation of South Stream is further evidence of the extensive fallout of the Ukraine crisis, but it will not mark a broader shift in Russia’s energy relations with Europe.”
