FPRI Mourns the Passing of William H. McNeill

  • July 14, 2016

William H. McNeillWe mourn the passing of William H. McNeill, the “dean” of world historians and a long-time member of our Board of Advisors. He is perhaps best known for his book The Rise of the West (1963) but other books include Plagues and Peoples (1976) and Keeping Together in Time (1995). Once the mentor of FPRI’s Walter McDougall at the University of Chicago, he keynoted our first History Institute for Teachers in 1996, speaking at Walter’s invitation on “What We Mean by the West,” published in Orbis, Fall 1997.  He addressed a subsequent History Institute on Multiculturalism in World History (also published in Orbis, Fall 1999).  He was also one of the first speakers in our first public lecture series — the Inter-University Seminar on Foreign Affairs — launched in 1985.  May his memory be a blessing.
