9:30 am: Europe on the Eve of the Great War, Michael Neiberg, US Army War College

The common explanation for the outbreak of World War I depicts Europe as a minefield of nationalism, needing only the slightest pressure to set off an explosion of passion that would rip the continent apart. But was that really the case? Drawing on his recent book, Dance of the Furies (Harvard, 2011), Michael Neiberg, one of the world’s leading authorities on World War I,  will re-examine the outbreak of World War I and put forward an alternative view. Neiberg is Professor of History in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the United States Army War College in Carlisle, PA. He is also author of  The Blood of Free Men, a history of the liberation of Paris in 1944.

11 am: Churchill and the Nazi Menace During the 1930s, John H. Maurer, US Naval War College and FPRI

Winston Churchill is remembered for having the courage to speak out about the danger posed by the growing power of Nazi Germany during the 1930s.  These warnings, however, proved unpalatable to Great Britain’s leaders, who sought to discredit Churchill.  This lecture examines Churchill’s assessment of the darkening international scene during the 1930s, his efforts to spur British rearmament, and how Britain’s economic condition, domestic politics, and strategic position inhibited a more effective response to the menace posed by Hitler’s Germany. By popular demand, we are pleased to welcome back John H. Maurer, a senior fellow of the Foreign Policy Research Institute and Chair of the Strategy and Policy Department, U.S. Naval War College, where he teaches a popular course on Winston Churchill and grand strategy.

This event is the second in a three part series at the New York Historical Society on Old Wars, New Threats.
