About the Event

Amid a staggering political, economic, and humanitarian crisis, 3 million people have fled Venezuela.  The US and 50 other countries have recognized the opposition leader as the legitimate government of Venezuela even as the Maduro regime continues in power.  Washington has imposed sanctions, threatened military action, and engaged in secret talks with the Maduro regime. To explore how Venezuela reached this stage, and where it goes from here, we are pleased to feature a recognized authority on Latin American affairs, Susan Kaufman Purcell.  She is an independent consultant and was director of the Center for Hemispheric Policy at the University of Miami. She has been Vice President of the Council of the Americas and a Senior Fellow of the Council of Foreign Relations.  She also served on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff. The author of editor of eleven books, she has been published in the NY Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post and has appeared on all the major networks, testified on Capitol Hill, and participated in private briefings at the White House.
