About the Event

As extremist movements threaten to destabilize democratic and other societies around the world, it has never been more important to understand what extremism is, where it comes from, and why it can escalate into violence.  To discuss these issues with us, we are pleased to feature J.M Berger, author of Extremism (MIT Press, 2018). He is a research fellow with VOX-Pol and a consultant to social media companies, security companies, and government agencies.  He has conducted research and training on issues related to homegrown terrorism, online extremism, advanced social media analysis, and countering violent extremism.

Berger is co-author with Jessica Stern of ISIS: The State of Terror, author of Jihad Joe: Americans Who Go to War in the Name of Islam, and author of The Turner Legacy: The Storied Origins and Enduring Impact of White Nationalism’s Deadly Bible. He writes regularly for The Atlantic and Politico. He is an associate fellow with the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, The Hague and a non-resident fellow with the Alliance for Securing Democracy. He previously served as an on-air consultant with PBS.  He is co-author with FPRI’s Clint Watts of Trolling for Trump: How Russia is Trying to Destroy our Democracy (War on the Rocks, Nov. 16, 2016). Berger is also a PhD candidate at Swansea University School of Law, where he is working to further his research on extremist ideologies.
