India, Pakistan and the Dispute over Kashmir

| Middle East Program

About the Event

Sumit GangulyIndia and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir, and with both countries in possession of nuclear weapons, there is always the fear that the dispute over this territory could escalate out of control. Also stoking the fire are the Pakistan-based terrorist groups operating in Kashmir.  And, very recently, India eliminated the autonomy that Kashmir, its only Muslim-majority state, has enjoyed to this day, raising new concerns about confrontation.  In this talk, Sumit Ganguly will explore the sources of the dispute and the possibilities of its resolution.

A world-renowned scholar, Sumit Ganguly is a senior fellow of FPRI and holds the Rabindranath Tagore Chair in Indian Cultures and Civilizations at Indiana University. He has been a fellow at Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC, a visiting fellow at Stanford University, and has held the Asia Chair at  Sciences Po in Paris and the Ngee Ann Chair at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He is author or editor of 20 books on South Asia, including Deadly Impasse: Indo-Pakistani Relations at the Dawn of a New Century; The Origins of War in South Asia: Indo-Pakistani Conflicts since 1947; and The Crisis in Kashmir. He writes frequently for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy.
