Political Implications of the Qatar World Cup in the Middle East and Beyond

December 14, 2022 | 11:00 am to 12:00 pm | Middle East Program

About the Event

Please join FPRI and MERIP for a special event discussing political developments surrounding this year's World Cup, the first to be hosted in the Arab world. Qatar's World Cup bid was marked by accusations of corruption and serious concerns about human rights violations in the midst of a massive investment in construction and infrastructure that has remade the small gulf kingdom's landscape for the purpose of hosting a month's worth of soccer matches. The World Cup arrives at a moment when Qatari influence across the region, from Egypt to Turkey and beyond appears to be reaching a climax. This event will feature three contributing authors to the most recent issue of Middle East Report discussing their contributions and reactions to some of the dramatic stories coming out of the event with FPRI's Director of Research, James Ryan.

This event is co-sponsored by the Middle East Research and Information Project.

FPRI is happy to provide this lecture free of charge thanks to the generous support of our members, partners, and event attendees. If you are not currently a member, the suggested donation is $25.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our events coordinator, Kayla Wendt at kwendt@fpri.org.
