Dangerous Democracy? American Internationalism and the Greater Near East

In this ‘‘September 12th era,’’ the National Security Strategy is premised on the United States’ need to promote democracy in all countries as part of an overarching declaration that the nation can best secure its interests by spreading its values. In his introduction to the 2002 Strategy, President Bush affirms that ‘‘freedom, democracy, and free enterprise’’ provide the only sustainable model for national success. The Strategy is based, he states, on ‘‘a distinctly American internationalism that reflects the union of our values and our national interests’’ and is designed ‘‘to help make the world not just safer but better.’’
