Disappearing Acts: The Detention of High-Profile Chinese Citizens

The question sounds like the beginning of a bad joke: What do an actress and former head of Interpol have in common? However, the answer is no laughing matter. Actress Fan Bingbing and former President of Interpol Meng Hongwei, both of whom are citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), have recently run afoul of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Fan disappeared from the public eye in July and re-surfaced in October, while Meng was reported missing in early October by his wife and has not been seen since. Their disappearances and detention made international news due to Fan’s status as an international star and Meng’s top position in an international organization.
