As 2019 begins, government campaigns around the world to stifle free expression by independent and critical voices are proceeding apace. This is happening not only in China and Russia, whose governments have lately taken to extending their internal repression across borders, and in semi-pariah states like Nicaragua and Burma, or in autocracies transactionally aligned with the West, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan—but now even inside the West, in Poland, Hungary and Spain.
