Douglas Pike has been research director of the Vietnam Center at Texas Tech University since 1997 and is editor of Indochina Chronology. A retired Foreign Service Officer (1950-1980), he was posted in Saigon, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Taipei. During his government service, he was generally regarded as the U.S. Government’s leading expert on Vietnamese communism. His Washington assignments included the Dept. of State Policy Planning Council, the Library of Congress’s Congressional Research Service, and the Dept. of Defense International Security Agency. His book Viet Cong: The Organizational Techniques of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam was published by MIT Press in 1965 and has since been published in 15 languages. He is also author of Vietnamese Communism (Hoover Institution Press, 1978). He travels yearly to Vietnam.
