Ed Heartney

Ed Heartney  is the Acting Director of the Office of Europe, the Western Hemisphere, and Africa in the Bureau of Energy Resources at the Department of State in Washington DC.  Ed has previously served in Nigeria (1999-2000), El Salvador (2001-2003), Washington (2004-2006), Monterrey Mexico (2006-2009), Sri Lanka (2009-2012), Afghanistan (2012-2013), and the UK (2013-2016).  In his career, Ed has worked on a variety of economic issues, including economic development, trade, and energy.  Ed has received two Superior Honor Awards and four Meritorious Honor Awards for his work.  Ed graduated from the University of Chicago with a Political Science degree, and he also graduated with honors from the University of Michigan Law School. 

In the Bureau of Energy Resources, Ed focuses on the Western Hemisphere and Africa, particularly on regional energy security, which can be achieved though increasing domestic energy sources, energy trade, and connecting electricity grids.
