George Herring is the Alumni Professor of History at the University of Kentucky and a noted scholar of the Vietnam War. His books on the subject include America’s Longest War: The United States and Vietnam, 1950-1975 (3d ed., 1995); The Secret Diplomacy of the Vietnam War: The Negotiating Volumes of the Pentagon Papers (1983); and LBJ and Vietnam: A Different Kind of War (1994). He has also been a visiting professor at the United States Military Academy, and was editor of the journal Diplomatic History. He earned a B.A. from Roanoke College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
