Joyce O. Appleby

Joyce Appleby, professor of history at UCLA, is president of the American Historical Association.   She is co-author of Telling the Truth About History (W.W. Norton, 1994); and author of Liberalism and Republicanism in the Historical Imagination (Harvard University Press, 1992) and Capitalism and a New Social Order: The Republican Vision of the 1790s (New York University Press, 1984).  She is a delegate to the American Council of Learned Societies, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Advisory Committee for The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, and a member of the Advisory Board for The Adams Papers.  She served on the National Council for History Standards, 1992-94, and currently .serves on the Council of the Smithsonian Institution.
