L.H. Gann is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford, California. He has held appointments at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford; Historische Kommission, West Berlin; and the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton, N.J. He is the author, co-author, or co-editor of thirty-eight books and monographs, most dealing with modern Africa.
