Stanley Wolpert

Stanley Wolpert is Distinguished Professor of South Asian History, University of California at Los Angeles.  Prof. Wolpert has published twenty books on South Asia, the most recent of which are: Nehru: A Tryst with Destiny (Oxford, 1996) and A New History of India (Oxford, 1996, 5th ed.).  His other works include: Tilak and Gokhale: Revolution and Reform in the Making of Modern India (1962); Roots of Confrontation in South Asia (Oxford 1982); Jinnah of Pakistan (Oxford, 1984); Zulfi Bhutto of Pakistan (Oxford, 1993).  He is currently at work on the sixth edition of his New History of India, which Oxford will publish next year, and on the “Life and Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.” He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959.
