The Untold Story of the Cold War at Sea

| National Security Program

About the Event

John F. Lehman, Jr.

Drawing on declassified documents as well as his personal experience as Secretary of the Navy during the Reagan Administration, John Lehman will reveal in this talk the untold story of the naval operations that helped win the Cold War. But more than that, he will explore the lessons of those stories for the great power competitions that still lie ahead of us. A student of FPRI founder Robert Strausz-Hupe, Lehman exemplifies the geopolitical orientation of his mentor. He received his Ph.D. from UPenn and got his start in the field of international relations at FPRI in the 1960s. From there he rose to many key positions including staff member to Henry Kissinger on the National Security Council, Deputy Director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, and a commissioner on the 9/11 Commission. His prizewinning books include On Seas of Glory: Heroic Men, Great Ships, and Epic Battles of the American Navy and Command of the Seas: Building the 600 Ship Navy. Lehman’s most recent book, Oceans Ventured: Winning the Cold War at Sea, is the basis for this talk and will be available for sale at the event.
