A nation must think before it acts.

With M23 rebels having seized control of Goma, a key city in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), control of the DRC’s mineral wealth is in doubt. Support for M23 by neighboring Rwanda also creates the threat of possible warfare in the region. Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East Africa Community (EAC), the two main regional multilateral entities, have called for talks to settle the dispute.
Paul Nantulya of the National Defense University’s Africa Center and Bob Wekesa from the Africa Center for the Study of the United States at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, join FPRI trustee and Africa Program chair Ambassador Charles Ray to discuss how this crisis impacts the region’s security and economies, and what it might mean for US Africa policy.
