Understanding the Russo-Ukrainian Ceasefire Negotiations

December 10, 2025 | 10:00 am to 11:00 am | Eurasia Program

About the Event

The Trump administration is pushing both Ukraine and Russia to reach agreement on a ceasefire and to kick-off formal talks on ending the war. The discussions have been mired in controversy, beginning with claims that the American draft was too favorable to Moscow and that it iced European leaders out of the discussions. Ukraine has pushed back, reportedly modifying the draft in ways that meet the government's minimum security aims, and engaging with key European allies who may be called upon to guarantee a peace settlement with some level of US support. The Zelensky administration also remains mired in a corruption scandal and Ukrainian forces are losing ground near the town of Pokrovsk, prompting intense and serious discussions within the country about the need for a ceasefire and an agreement with Russia to recuperate from the bruising war.

What is the latest news? What does it all mean for Europe and the United States? Aaron will sit down with Dr. Emily Holland, FPRI's Eurasia program director, to discuss the latest news, the future of European security, and the prospects for a durable ceasefire to take hold.
