October elections in Latvia resulted in a historic victory for the United List, a center-right, regionalist, and green conservative political alliance. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, the United List earned 41 of the parliament’s 100 seats—the largest mandate since the restoration of independence. Meanwhile, the Union of Greens and Farmers—which has been a major player in Latvian politics for a quarter century—failed to secure any seats, while Latvia’s leading social democratic party, the Progressives, grew their support. While there is little doubt Kulbergs will remain the head of government, the parliament will have much to take on in the coming four years, from domestic concerns to the increasingly volatile security situation in the region.
In this webinar, FPRI’s Baltic Sea Fellow Dr. Indra Ekmanis will discuss the results of the election with Pauls Raudseps, leading journalist and commentator at the Latvian publication Ir, moderated by Dr. Jānis Chakars of Neumann University. For a deeper look at the election process and political parties before the vote, watch the September 24 event, "Latvia Goes to the Polls: Watching the Political Winds Blow."
