A nation must think before it acts.
PHILADELPHIA – The Foreign Policy Research Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of John R. Haines as a Senior Fellow.
John R. Haines is a trustee of FPRI, where he is a member of its executive, finance, and nominating committees, and Executive Director of FPRI’s Princeton Committee. An active investor and entrepreneur whose current efforts focus on nuclear smuggling and terrorism, in 2010 John co-founded, as Chief Executive Officer, Ionetix Corporation, to develop proprietary particle accelerator and fissile material detection technologies.
In a different field altogether, he earlier co-founded a human stem cell therapeutics company that developed what Nature ranked as the second most dominant stem cell patent estate worldwide. Beginning his career as a mathematical economist, Haines also spent time professionally in maritime operations and in government.
An honors graduate of Villanova University, where he was the Adam Smith Scholar in Economics, John has been a student of security and intelligence matters for many years. He holds advanced degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Fels Scholar, and from the University’s Graduate School of Medicine; and from King’s College London. He also studied at Stanford and UC Berkeley. A life member of both the United States Naval War College Foundation and the United States Naval Institute, he is also a member of the executive committee of the Friends of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
Haines is author of the FPRI E-Book A Perfect Storm Ahead? An Exploration of the Risk of Nuclear Terrorism (FPRI, 2014) and of several FPRI essays, including a forthcoming article in Orbis on territorial disputes in the Sea of Okhotsk, a marginal sea bounded by Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula and Sakhalin Island, and the Kuril Islands archipelago. FPRI’s Princeton Committee, which he directs, is a monthly forum in Princeton featuring presentations by a mix of FPRI and guest scholars.
A vital member of FPRI’s board and an active participant in the homeland security community, Mr. Haines is one of the foremost experts on the contemporary terrorist threat, and we are delighted to have him become a Senior Fellow.
