“Of course, for someone like Vladimir Putin who grew up and made his career in the Soviet era, the Soviet Union that marked a time when Russia was a superpower. It was one of the two great players in world politics. And of course, with the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia went through an extremely difficult time economically, politically, and virtually by any standard or any marker and one way for Putin to sort of demonstrate both to his society and to the greater world that Russia was back, was to rebuild Russia’s sports program.”
