Michael M. Novakovic was born in Yugoslavia but his family left under duress. He eventually came to the United States, where he attended Syracuse University and joined ROTC.  He served with the US Air Force for 26 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel in Air Force intelligence. He went on to establish a very successful business in developing heat-resistant paint and ran it until he retired.
