Will US Military Deployment Reduce Nigerian Political Violence?

March 16, 2026 | 10:30 am to 11:30 am | Africa Program

About the Event

As Nigeria grapples with escalating insecurity, the US Government is deploying military forces to the country—ostensibly in a training role—to assist the Nigerian government in dealing with extremist violence. FPRI Africa Program chair, Charles A. Ray, is joined by Cheta Nwanze, founder of SBM Intelligence; Dr. Kabir Adamu, managing director of Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited; James Barnett, a research fellow at Hudson Institute; and Michael Walsh, a senior research consultant on US foreign policy, all experts in their fields, to discuss whether US military intervention is the correct response in the context of the complex security challenges facing Nigeria, from democratic backsliding to conflicts between farmers and herders over access to land to fundamentalist Islamic terrorist activities.
