Zeitenwende in Action: Germany’s Future Role in NATO Security

For decades, Germany’s position in NATO was defined by a delicate balance: serving as a reliable alliance partner while exercising diplomatic restraint and relying heavily on the security umbrella provided by its transatlantic allies. 

In the wake of shifting geopolitical realities, emerging security threats, and a reordering of the global strategic landscape, the debate surrounding Germany’s military readiness, industrial capability, and strategic leadership has taken center stage. The proclamation of the Zeitenwende marked a clear intention to step forward, but key questions remain regarding how that vision translates into long-term policy, sustained capability building, and proactive leadership on NATO’s Eastern Flank.

How can Germany transition into a true anchor of European conventional defense within NATO’s two-pillar structure? What structural and budgetary reforms are required to ensure the Bundeswehr can meet NATO's expanded readiness demands? How will Berlin navigate evolving expectations from its allies to take on greater burden-sharing while maintaining European cohesion?
