The Security Situation in Cameroon

Conflict between the Anglophone and Francophone communities in Cameroon began in September 2017, when English-speaking separatists in the Northwest and Southwest regions began a guerrilla campaign against the government, demanding secession and the establishment of an independent English-speaking country. Conflict between the two communities has been going on for nearly a decade, with open violence for the past six years, with no end in sight. Amid other conflicts in Africa dominating international headlines, Cameroon’s civil war has been largely ignored.

Trustee and Africa Program Chair Ambassador Charles Ray will be joined by a panel of experts, including Dr. Gabriel Cyrille Nguijoi, Dr. Roger Motaze, and Michael Walsh, to discuss the origins of the conflict, the current situation, and the prospects for a peaceful settlement.
