FPRI Launches New Initiative for Deterrence and Arms Control Led by Jeffrey Lewis
The Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) today announced the launch of the Initiative for Deterrence and Arms Control, led by Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, a Distinguished Research Fellow at FPRI, and staffed by a team of open-source researchers who have worked together for more than a decade. The initiative builds on the long collaboration between Lewis and FPRI President Aaron Stein, whose Arms Control Wonk podcast has been a fixture of the nuclear policy community for years.
John Ford, Michael Duitsman, and Seth Hosford have joined FPRI as full-time Fellows, and Sam Lair, previously a Fellow in FPRI’s National Security Program, has also joined the staff full time. Together with Lewis, they bring to FPRI one of the most accomplished open-source research teams in the field, now working under one roof at its new institutional home.
The team is widely recognized for its pioneering use of satellite imagery, digital tools, and open-source methods to track, analyze, and shed light on nuclear weapon and missile developments around the world. With cooperative arms control at its lowest ebb in decades and with countries rearming for an uncertain future, this work is more critical than ever, and it will be a central part of FPRI’s engagement with its members, clients, and readers.
“Jeffrey and I have been podcast partners for more than a decade. Formalizing this partnership—and doing it with the rest of the team—is truly tremendous. I am so excited to get to work,” said Aaron Stein, President of the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
“This is the best open-source research team working on nuclear weapons today, and it deserves an institution that matches its ambitions. Aaron and I have built so much together through the Arms Control Wonk podcast and community. Bringing the whole team into that partnership was a natural next step,” said Lewis.
The initiative will provide policymakers, researchers, and the public with unparalleled clarity on some of the world’s most pressing security challenges, drawing on a suite of new tools and capabilities to expand awareness of global nuclear developments.
“We have big ambitions for our arms control and deterrence work, and we have a lot planned for the future. Stay tuned,” according to John Ford, the initiative’s program manager.
