Eastern Orthodoxy is the major religious denomination in ten European countries, all but one of which (Greece) are former communist states.’ More so than in the rest of Catholic or Protestant Western Europe, the Orthodox churches of Eastern Europe have long been openly and actively involved in national politics and are intimately and historically connected with the region’s dominant postcommunist ideology–nationalism.
