Rensselaer (Rens) W. Lee III was a Senior Fellow at FPRI and president of Global Advisory Services, a McLean, Virginia-based consulting firm. He was the author of Russia’s Far East: New Dynamics in Asia Pacific and Beyond, Smuggling Armageddon: the Nuclear Black Market in the Former Soviet Union and Europe, and of numerous scholarly articles. Dr. Lee received his doctoral degree from Stanford University. He performed overseas contract assignments for the State Department, the Department of Energy, the World Bank, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and other agencies, which have encompassed Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Caribbean, and much of South America. During 2002-03, he worked as a research analyst at the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress, where he produced major reports on terrorist finance, nuclear smuggling and Afghanistan’s opium-heroin trade. In 2009, he was a Title VIII-supported short-term scholar at the Kennan Institute of Advanced Russian Studies.
