How Will Xi Handle the Succession Process?

October 07, 2025 | 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm | Asia Program

About the Event

Xi Jinping has ruled China for well over a decade now, making him the longest serving official leader of China since Mao Zedong. As the prospect sharpens for his fourth and perhaps even fifth term as China’s leader, what challenges might he face? Would those challenges and ways to resolve them be similar to those faced by Mao in the latter years of his rule? Also have recent personnel patterns given observers any clues on the types of leadership and policy processes we will see in the coming decades?

Victor Shih, author of Coalitions of the Weak: Elite Politics in China from Mao’s Strategem to the Rise of Xi, will address these questions in conversation with FPRI Asia Program Senior Fellow Neysun Mahboubi.
