The Future of European Security

March 07, 2025 | 9:30 am to 10:30 am | National Security Program

About the Event

The future of the US-European security partnership is now in doubt. President Trump has called for a division of labor for the continent's defense, wherein European militaries would provide the majority of forces for Europe's defense, while the United States continued its pivot to Asia. The potential drawdown of US forces from Europe, combined with uncertainty over the future of US support for Ukraine has forced European leaders to think about how to defend against a revanchist Russia without a large US presence on the continent.

What comes next? How should European defense be reimagined and reorganized to meet the current moment? FPRI was founded in 1955 to discuss a changing global order. To continue this mission, Dr. Aaron Stein, president of FPRI, will host a discussion with Sir Lawrence Freedman, an Emeritus Professor of War Studies at King's College, and author of numerous books on international history, strategic theory and nuclear weapons issues.
