Reports of a possible South African arms transfer to Russia, coming on the heels of a joint South Africa-China-Russia naval exercise and South Africa’s increasingly ambivalent stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, threaten to damage the US-South Africa relationship. Professor Paul Nantulya of National Defense University; Michael Walsh, Visiting Researcher at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service; Professor Siphamandla Zondi, professor of politics and international relations at the University of Johannesburg; and Professor Chris Landsberg, Chair of African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy at the University of Johannesburg join FPRI Africa Program chair, Ambassador Charles Ray for a discussion on the potential impact of the alleged arms transfer on US relations with the southern Africa powerhouse.
